Response Time Increased by 200 milliseconds

One evening our team of experts received a call from the client SRE team.

They had observed that there was an average increase of about 200 milliseconds in the response time for all APIs across the board.

Our team of experts decided not to leave any stone unturned. While the preliminary discussions tried to focus on the network, application and other related areas however our team of experts smelled something fishy with the database server.

They led on to an in-depth discovery of what exactly was happening inside. After detailed investigation, it was identified that the plan cache which otherwise used to be around 30 GB in size had reduced to a few megabytes in size. They identified that a particular memory clerk was consuming a whole lot of memory more than what it used to.

Since the plan cache was almost not there, every single query hitting the database engine was getting compiled and there was no plan-reuse.

This finding clearly explained the increase in the response times all aboard.

The client was elated with our teams in-depth understanding of the SQL Server database engine and awarded us with more work.

We continue to serve the client happily.
